Clutch Kits for Sale in South Africa

Complete Clutch Kits.
3-Piece Replacement.

The clutch is what lets a manual transmission engage and disengage smoothly from the engine — and it’s also the one component everyone hopes will outlast the rest of the car but rarely does. When a clutch starts slipping, grabbing, or refusing to disengage, it needs replacing, and almost always as a complete three-piece kit. At Just Brakes & Clutch we stock Mecarm complete clutch kits for most manual vehicles on South African roads.

What we stock

Mecarm Complete Clutch Kits

Our clutch range is the Mecarm product line — complete three-piece kits engineered to OEM fitment for most manual transmissions in SA. Mecarm kits cover passenger cars, bakkies, and light commercials from major manufacturers, with consistent quality from one supplier across the range.

What's in a Kit

What's in a Complete Clutch Kit.

A clutch is not a single part. Every Mecarm kit contains the three components that wear together and should be replaced together:

  • Friction disc (clutch plate) — the wearing surface that transfers engine torque to the gearbox. The most heavily-worn component.
  • Pressure plate (clutch cover) — the spring-loaded assembly that clamps the friction disc against the flywheel.
  • Release bearing (throw-out bearing) — the bearing that disengages the clutch when you press the pedal.

Some kits also include an alignment tool to help during fitment. Pilot/spigot bearings and dual-mass flywheel inspection are often required at the same time but supplied separately.

Why complete kits matter: the pressure plate and release bearing wear at similar rates to the friction disc. Replacing only the friction plate means the gearbox often has to come out again 20,000-40,000 km later when the pressure plate or bearing fails. Doing all three together costs marginally more in parts but saves an entire second labour bill.

Failure Signs

Signs Your Clutch is Failing.

Most clutches give plenty of warning before they fail outright. Watch for:

  • Slipping — engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate proportionally, especially under load.
  • Burning smell after hill climbs or stop-start traffic — the friction disc is overheating.
  • High biting point — the pedal needs to come almost all the way out before the clutch engages.
  • Hard or stiff pedal — usually indicates pressure plate issues.
  • Grinding when shifting — the clutch is not fully disengaging.
  • Vibration during engagement — disc damage or flywheel wear.

If any of these are present, get the clutch inspected before complete failure leaves you stranded with a much bigger repair bill.

Replacement Process

What a Clutch Replacement Involves

Clutch replacement is one of the most labour-intensive routine repairs because the gearbox has to come out to reach the clutch. A typical job:

  • Drop the gearbox to access the clutch assembly.
  • Inspect the flywheel — if heat-spotted, scored, or below specification, it needs replacing or machining (separate part and cost).
  • Fit the new friction disc, pressure plate, and release bearing from the kit.
  • Bleed the hydraulic clutch system on cars with hydraulic actuation.
  • Bedding-in period — drive gently for the first 500-1,000 km to allow the new clutch to seat properly.

Most clutch replacements take a full day of workshop time. Your fitment partner can confirm specifics for your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a clutch last?

Typically 100,000-150,000 km for normal driving, though city driving, heavy loads, towing, and aggressive starts shorten clutch life dramatically. Some clutches outlast the vehicle; others fail at 60,000 km from harsh use.

Can I replace just the friction disc and not the rest?

You can, but it is almost never recommended. The pressure plate and release bearing have already worn alongside the disc — they will fail soon after, requiring a second gearbox-out repair. The labour is far more expensive than the parts.

Do I need to replace the flywheel too?

Sometimes. Single-mass flywheels can usually be machined and reused. Dual-mass flywheels (common on diesels and many modern petrols) generally need replacement when worn — they cannot be machined. Have it inspected when the gearbox is out.

Why is my new clutch slipping after a few weeks?

Most likely the bedding-in process was not followed — hard starts, towing, or aggressive driving in the first 500-1,000 km can glaze the new friction disc and cause permanent slipping. Quality fitment partners brief you on the bedding-in period.

Does Just Brakes & Clutch do clutch replacements in-store?

We are parts specialists, not a workshop. We supply complete clutch kits and our team can recommend trusted fitment partners in your area. Trade customers can have parts supplied directly to their preferred workshop.

What about automatic transmission failures?

Mecarm clutch kits are for manual transmissions only. Automatic transmission service or repair is a different field requiring specialist transmission shops — we do not supply auto-transmission parts.
