Brake Pads for Sale in South Africa

Quality Brake Pads.
Most SA Vehicles.

The brake pad is the most-replaced safety part on any vehicle, and the wrong choice can cost you in noise, dust, premature disc wear, or — worst case — stopping distance when it matters. At Just Brakes & Clutch we stock independently-tested brake pads for most makes and models on South African roads, available at 14 stores across the country.

What we stock

Messi Brake Pads — Our Premium Range

Our brake-pad range is the Messi product line — premium pads with ECE R90 certification, low noise, and long service life. Messi pads cover the vast majority of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and bakkies in South Africa, from city runabouts to heavier 4x4s. Replacement-grade pads, OEM fitment, no compromise.

Why ECE R90 matters

The Safety Standard Behind Every Pad.

If you only learn one thing about replacement brake pads, learn this: ECE R90 is the European safety standard that requires independent laboratory testing of a replacement pad against the original-equipment pad. To pass, the replacement must perform within ±15% of the OEM pad across friction, wear, fade, and noise — not the manufacturer’s own claim, but a test conducted by an authorised independent body.

Pads without R90 certification can legally be sold in South Africa, but no independent body has verified they perform anywhere near OEM standards. Many cheaper pads on the market are uncertified. The difference shows up under hard braking, in the wet, and over the lifespan of the pad.

Beyond certification, the Messi range we stock is engineered for:

  • Low noise. Noise-damping shims and friction compounds tuned to eliminate squeal and rumble.
  • Long service life. Quality friction material wears slowly and predictably — fewer replacements over the life of the vehicle.
  • Fade resistance. Repeated hard braking heats the pad surface; cheap pads lose grip when hot. Quality pads hold consistent friction at temperature.
  • Wide coverage. One supplier across the range means consistency for trade customers fitting pads across many vehicle types.

Replacement Signs

How to Tell When Your Brake Pads Need Replacing.

Most brake pads last between 40,000 and 70,000 km depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and pad quality. Warning signs that you’re approaching the end of their service life:

  • Squealing or screeching when you brake — the wear indicator is doing its job; replace soon.
  • Grinding or scraping — the pad has worn to the backing plate; replace urgently and inspect the disc.
  • Brake warning light on the dashboard, if your vehicle has electronic wear sensors fitted.
  • Increased stopping distance or a softer feel through the pedal.
  • Visible pad thickness below 3 mm when inspected — pads start around 10-12 mm new.

Have your pads inspected at every service, or sooner if any of these signs appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my brake pads?

Most pads last 40,000-70,000 km depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and pad quality. City drivers wear pads faster than highway drivers. Have them inspected at every service.

What does ECE R90 certification actually mean?

ECE R90 is the European safety standard for replacement brake pads. Independent testing must confirm the pad performs within ±15% of the original equipment pad across friction, wear, fade, and noise. It is a real safety assurance, not self-certification — and the key reason to avoid uncertified pads.

Do I need to replace brake discs at the same time as pads?

Not always, but inspect disc thickness when changing pads. If discs are near the minimum thickness stamped on them, or showing deep scoring or vibration during braking, replace them at the same time. New pads on worn discs wear unevenly and do not deliver full performance.

Can I drive with worn brake pads?

Worn pads dramatically increase stopping distance and risk damaging the disc — making the repair more expensive. If you hear grinding, the pad backing plate is contacting the disc. Stop driving and get the vehicle inspected.
